Fun with Rally: CARO Novice, Team and Brace

Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00pm, for 8 weeks, starting June 3rd, with

Jane Hammond & Hilary Mckeown

Prerequisite for this course completion of Heeling Skills 1 or permission from the instructor.

This course will introduce participants to entry level Canadian Association of Rally Obedience (CARO) competition. We will specifically work on skills related to the Rally Novice level of the CARO competition. As students acquire the skills necessary, we will provide opportunities for them to practice rally courses. In addition, we will also introduce CARO's Rally Team Competitions. In Rally Team courses, two handlers and their dogs will work together to complete a full course. Finally, this course will introduce handlers to CARO's Working Class competition and handlers will begin to learn three working class skills: Around the Clock; Back Up; and Designated Retrieve. This class will be best suited to dogs that are not reactive. Teams will be asked to crate their dogs when they do a walk through of the course so it will be important for dogs to be able to relax comfortably in a crate OR for handlers to be willing to work on crate skills. Learning the skills introduced in this course will take time and consistent practice. Students who have completed Foundations are welcome to register for this course. Students who have completed some of the Heeling Skills courses or who have some experience with Rally and/or Obedience may be further along than those who come directly from Foundations but the instructor will work with all students to advance their skills regardless of their starting point. The skills associated with CARO Rally can easily be transferred and used in CKC rally competitions. CARO's working class skills may help you work on skills that are relevant to CKC Obedience or even to agility. NADA hosts CARO trials and in addition, twice a year CARO offers competitors the opportunity to compete virtually. While rally is frequently a handlerdog teams first choice, this sport is also great for dogs who are learning to cope with distraction and arousal; it is also good for dogs who are not interested or suited for agility or who are retired from agility. There will be an evaluation at the end of this course.

Special Note:

BRACE - Handlers may sign up for this course with a single dog or with two dogs. CARO provides an opportunity for handlers to work on Brace titles. If a handler signs up with two dogs, the expectation is that the handler will work on the rally skills with both dogs at the same time in preparation for working on a Rally Novice Brace title. Dogs registered for Brace should already be familiar with either CARO or CKC Novice Rally signs and be primarily focused on learning to do these signs as part of a Brace team. When working class skills are taught, the handler will be expected to work with only one of the dogs for that portion of the class while the other dog waits quietly in the kennel.
